Passionflower

With its alien-looking flowers, egg-shaped fruit and wandering tendrils, passionflower is one of the most unusual plants you’ll ever come across in the U.S. Known botanically as Passiflora incarnata, passionflower is native to the southeast and mid-south regions of the United States. This climbing vine that so entranced Spanish missionaries in the 1600s can grow 30 feet long, inhabiting fence rows, woodlands and backyards alike.

Traditional Medical Uses for Passionflower

Native Americans crushed passionflower’s lobed leaves and applied them directly to the skin to ease bruises, cuts and other wounds. Infusions made from the leaves were used to treat ear infections, strengthen the blood and relieve stress. And until 1978, when the FDA pulled its support of the herb, it was included in many over-the-counter sleep aids.

Passionflower Today

In 1978, the FDA re-classified passionflower as a Class II herb, citing a lack of substantiated evidence that passionflower was effective as a sedative. But passionflower is still widely used in Europe where passionflower extract is frequently combined with extracts of other natural sedatives like valerian, chamomile and lemon balm.

Today’s herbalists use passionflower as a digestive aid, as a stress-reducer and as an insomnia treatment. Passionflower can be used fresh but it’s more frequently dried for use in pills, teas and extractions like tinctures and infusions.

Current Research

Though passionflower is widely used, it’s not been widely studied. But the few studies that have been done are encouraging. A European study of people with generalized anxiety disorder found that passionflower was as effective as prescription medications as relieving anxiety.

And another study looking at treatments for congestive heart failure found that an extract of hawthorn and passionflower improved symptoms like shortness of breath.

Other unproven uses for passionflower include opiate detoxification, ADHD and seizures.

Party Planning Checklist

Here’s a quick party planning checklist:

Make yourself a gorgeous party planning notebook with an inexpensive plastic three-ring binder that has a space to insert an inspirational picture. Keep cutouts from magazines of ideas you love about decorating, themes, menus, and recipes. Keep notes about your party afterwards so you remember what worked well and what to do differently next year. Your personal party journal will be an invaluable assistant to help you avoid holiday stress.

Party Invitations

Create dramatic invitations. Your friends pay more attention to a written invitation than a phone call.

Send your invitations early and request an RSVP.

Tell your guests what to wear so they feel comfortable. Causal fun or dressy elegant.

Tell your guests what to bring so they don’t have to think about it. If you say something like “We’re collecting unwrapped toys for our local …,” your guests won’t feel like they need to go shopping for you, too. List a specific dish type if you plan a pot luck.

Food

Check catering prices. You might be pleasantly surprised to find that you can have your feast delivered for about the same price as purchasing all the ingredients. Get your order in writing or faxed to you.

Make a list of all ingredients you need and shop early.

Prepare some of your dishes a few days before your party.

Plan for vegetarians and special needs diets.

Flowers

Think about your home’s color scheme when choosing flowers. A large poinsettia makes a big impact and costs less than florist bouquets. Add tree branch cuttings from your garden to extend grocery bouquets. Use curling ribbon as filler. Tie candy canes around a can and use for a floral arrangement.

Candles

Make sure that candles won’t damage your surfaces. Larger candles burn longer and you don’t have to worry about watching them during a long party. Keep candles high and out of the way from children and your guest’s hair.

Enjoy yourself and relax. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect. Your guests will have fun in a home decorated for the holidays. Friends appreciate a good time and will remember your gracious efforts to ensure a good time.

Embrace Pink Roses for Your Wedding Flowers

Unlike the red rose, which is symbolic of love, the pink rose is a symbol of style and poetic romance. It’s an endearing wedding flower selection, as it embraces gratitude, happiness, and passion.

While some may argue that there’s too much importance placed on the color of wedding flowers carried by the bride, others will beg to differ. After all, roses and bouquets have traditionally conveyed messages throughout our history. Flowers have always been seen as a symbol of love and beauty. When carried by the bride, wedding flowers represent a celebration of love, fertility, and unity (as these flowers are grouped together in a bouquet).

A simple pink assortment of roses is an excellent choice for the bridal bouquet. It carries a direct message of peace and happiness. Pink is a soft and subtle color that will enhance any white gown. It’s feminine and tranquil. All too often a bride picks a bold floral arrangement for her wedding bouquet which takes everyone’s attention off of her beautiful gown. That’s just too unfortunate.

In recent years, dyed roses are embraced by many young brides. Unfortunately these vibrant colors are very unnatural. They send a message of “artificial love.” On the other hand, a pink rose wedding bouquet has no faux statements attached to it. It’s simple and elegant. It’s natural, as are the feelings attached to it.

There’s a wide assortment of shades to choose from when you select pink roses as for your wedding bouquet. There are soft pinks, hot pinks, mauve pinks, and dark pinks. While this may seem overwhelming, a florist will be more than happy to help you select the one that suits your wedding attire and decorations. Don’t be shy, ask any question you may have. Florists are professionals. They’ve heard just about every scenario before!

Pink is friendly, compassionate, and faithful. In addition to being a wonderful flower to select for your wedding bouquet, it’s the official color of Valentines Day. As pink is such a soft color, it would look lovely in both a Spring wedding summer bouquet, as well as a summer wedding bouquet. A pink rose is the universal symbol of beauty.

Getting the Most Out of Trade Shows

As an exhibitor, you want to use a trade show to reaffirm existing business relationships, identify new customers and potential partners, and scope out the opposition.

Planning

Success starts with identifying the right show or shows for your business. Check with your industry or trade association for referrals and a show schedule. Many groups have Web sites, and other Internet resources offer good starting points to find schedules and contact information.
Preparation

Once you make your show selection, prepare to exploit the opportunity. What?s your budget? What about staffing? Booth design? Signage? Special promotions? Direct mail? Giveaways? Product demonstrations? A lot depends on how much money you have to spend. High-tech displays and multimedia presentations are eye-catching but expensive, and they may not be as cost-effective as a couple of well-trained staffers armed with fact-filled sales brochures, a useful give-away item and a smile.
Presentation

With your commitment made to set up an exhibit, how will you execute your presentation? Sweat the details before you arrive at the trade show. Select the right people to staff your booth. Conduct preshow meetings to identify goals and objectives. Agree on guidelines for interacting with visitors and qualifying customers. Place company literature and give-away items at the back of your booth space so interested attendees will have to come inside to get them. Don?t block the booth with tables, which can prohibit traffic flow into your area. Arrive early, work hard and stay late. Be courteous and helpful to visitors. Treat big customers with care — consider hosting a cocktail party to show them they?re special — and listen closely.

Follow-up

Remember to hold a postshow debriefing to let everyone share what they heard and learned. And, it doesn?t end there. In addition to all the work that piled up while you were away, now you have to follow up on every lead generated during the show. Those leads, and your resulting sales, are the real payoff from an effective trade show performance.

How Sesame and Sunflower Seeds Can Relieve Constipation

Sesame seeds for constipation

Using sesame and sunflower seeds for constipation make a lot of sense. If you like to eat seeds then this is once way you can add more fiber, vitamins and minerals to your diet and at the same time reduce your constipation.

Maoshing Ni, Ph.D., C.A. and Cathy McNease, B.S., M.H. in their book, The TAO of Nutrition,1987, recommends using black sesame seeds for chronic constipation. Here’s what he says,

“Grind black sesame seeds into a meal by using a small coffee grinder.
Mix with dark honey into a small ball.
Eat one three time a day dipped in rice wine.”

Black sesame seeds also provide nutrition and action on the liver, intestines, kidney, and blood.

You can also prepare a sesame seeds soup with brown rice.
Soak 10 parts of sesame seeds with 1 part brown rice in distilled water
After they are soft, about an hour, pour out the water grind them in a small food grinder to produce liquid. Strain the remaining liquid to remove coarse particles.

Dilute liquid with distilled water and add some honey.
Cook on low heat until liquid becomes syrupy
Drink around two cups to relieve constipation with in hour or so.

And also, peas and brown sesame seeds - help to lubricate the intestinal walls. This makes it easier for fecal matter to move through your colon.

Sunflower seeds for constipation

Sunflower seeds promote regularity. Use them raw shelled and unsalted every day. They contain omega-6 fatty acid just like olive oil. You can use them grounded and add them to your morning smoothie, 1-2 teaspoons, or to your homemade salad dressing

? Add them to your salad
? Add them to your morning cereal

Here’s a sunflower drink you can make.

Take 1-2 tablespoons of sunflower seeds. Grind them in a coffee grinder. Add them to a cup of boiling water. Sweeten this mixture with honey, maple syrup, or blackstrap molasses. Drink this combination morning and night to help you with you constipation.

When you use grounded sunflower seed to add to your salad dressing your can also use sesame seeds at the same time. Use both of these seeds and experiment and find out how you like preparing them and eating them.

Fresh Cut Flowers

Fresh cut flowers are those commonly found at your nearest florist. They come in a variety of colors and choices and you have the option to choose any variety of flowers of any color to make your own bouquet. As beautiful as fresh cut flowers are, it is quite unfortunate they do not last long. However, there are ways we can ensure that the flowers that we purchase lasts longer. The obvious tip is to choose the freshest flower. The secret is in the petal. Flowers with firm and ‘upright’ petals are considered to be freshest and make sure that you purchase flower buds or those that are just beginning to bloom.

The following are some tips on how to prolong the life of the cut flowers:

The vase or container that you choose to place your flowers has to be clean and filled with cool or lukewarm water

Cut of the leaves from the stems from below the water line of your container and cut of one or two inches of the bottom stem to allow the flowers to absorb water easily

Flowers last longer in cool / cold atmosphere therefore do not leave the flowers overnight in warm rooms and do not place them near heat or heat generating appliances

Flowers in water tend to generate slime caused by bacteria. To avoid this, use a few drops of household bleach and a spoonful of sugar. Even though there are commercially produced flower foods available in the market, it is not as effective as the combination of bleach and sugar.

Re-cut the bottom stems every few days to allow better water absorption and fill your vase or container with fresh water everyday.

Certain flowers need special care. For instance, bulb flowers like daffodils lasts longer if their stems are snipped across at an angle and by removing the sticky white secretion. Woody stem flowers like roses last longer if their bottom stems are crushed and split to allow them to absorb water easily. To stop tulips from slumping over, the bunch should be wrapped tightly with wet newspaper left in 2-3 inches of water for at least one and half hours. Then push small pins through the stems just below the flower heads and voila the flowers will be upright!

Flowers as a Sign of Condolence

One of the most significant ways that you can show your condolences for the family of a deceased person is to send sympathy flowers. Normally, funerals are adorned with sympathy flowers from many concerned friends and acquaintances. Sympathy flowers are a traditional way to brighten up the home of the bereaved family and hopefully divert their grief. Sympathy flowers are a way to commemorate and honor the life of the deceased.

It is important to remember that if you are limited in your budget, synthetic flowers are not appropriate. There are several different lower priced sympathy flower arrangements that would be a better choice. Bud vases, table arrangements, and small wreaths in fresh flowers make a more tasteful choice than a large synthetic flower arrangement.

There are many choices in sympathy flowers. Standing arrangements, sprays, casket drapes, and planters are all common sympathy flower purchases. When ordering a sympathy flower arrangement, you can make a choice of type of flower, color, and style of the arrangement. These options allow you to totally customize and personalize your sympathy flower purchase.

One of the most popular sympathy flower arrangements currently is the garden basket planter. These arrangements are unique because the flowers can be kept and grown in the planter as a reminder for the family members of the deceased.

If you find yourself in a position where you need to send sympathy flowers there are certain things you need to consider. There are some cultural and religious differences that can influence the choice of sympathy flowers. For most cultures and religions, sympathy flowers are accepted and welcomed. However, for some members of the Muslim faith the emphasis at a funeral is on simplicity. Sympathy flowers are not appropriate in this case. Additionally, the shape of sympathy flowers is of important consideration. Sympathy flowers are often arranged in a cross shape, but this would not be appropriate for a Jewish funeral.

Flower Shops

As the need for flower gifts and flower arrangements is fast increasing, the industry of floristry is booming. As you may have noticed, there are flower shops on every street corner. Flower stands also abound in almost every major city on every street. These shops and stands offer a variety of flowers for every occasion — birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, etc.

There are also flower shops that offer flower arrangements and consulting services for big parties such as weddings and birthday celebrations. Such services typically include floral decorations and arrangements for the venues and churches. Corsages and bouquets are also included depending on the deal.

Flower shops offer a variety of services. To better suit your needs, you have to check the kind of flower shops available in your area and the commodities they offer. Generally, there are four types of flower shops. These include the traditional full service shops, the studio shops, the kiosks and freelancers. Freelancers don’t necessarily have a shop, but are people who offer their talents and skills in floral services. Traditional shops, on the other hand, are those shops that have regular business hours and offer almost every service known in the floral business. If you’re looking for flower shops offering special services, the traditional type is what you need.

On the other hand, studio flower shops are small stores offering limited services and consultations. If you’re looking for a variety of flowers, this type of shop will fit your needs. If you’ve come across floral stands in the center of your local malls, in transport stations such as train, bus terminals, ports, etc. they are the kiosks types of shop.

It is important that you know the types of flower shops available to you. Hence, you can avoid going to shops that don’t really offer the kinds of services you need. For more flower shops references, the Internet offers lots of online sites. These sites include information such as locations, contact numbers, etc. Printed materials like magazines and books about flowers may also include ads of various flower shops and their commodities.
